Connecting the World Online

This is a review of the "Connecting the World Online" flat classroom project wiki. Click on the title above see the project being reviewed.

Overall

The wiki was overall very informative. Most of the videos were very good, but listening to some of them was hard. Watching the movies showed how many people worked on this single page. The current events also were a good choice from the wide range of happenings in having to do with the Internet. The information at the end of the wiki on the impact of the Internet on education and businesses covered many subjects in a very nice manner. Overall the wiki was nicely presented.

Movies

We (Morgan, Christine, and Leila) have reviewed this web page, and looked at the videos and information on it.

Design and Innovation:

"Ring for Jimmy"-We all agree that the idea was innovative. However, we also felt that the humorous context with which it was written felt a little out of place after the very serious and professional paragraph that it followed. It also took a bit of thought (which most youtubers do not usually use when watching videos) to comprehend the relationship between Jimmy's ring and the internet. In addition to that, the editing was a bit choppy. The analogy was good, but the way you presented it was not.

"Treckster and the Lamp"- A mix of Addalin and The Crocidile Hunter very good idea. In addition to being creative, I liked the way you added Amelia's uses of the internet gave the movie a meaning, and highlighting Amelia's main points by inserting them into the bottom of the screen was a nice touch. A little music in the backround would have been nice, and when the random interjections poped up it slowed the pace of the movie considerably. The movie was short, creative, and "to the point."

"Connecting the World Online"- The idea and presentation were very good, and the area where begining the movie was filmed was a good place to film (much like where anyone would use the Internet). However the music in the film was not ideal. The way the laptop was introduced into the film was quite odd also, a friend of the girl could have showed it to her instead of a stray hand giving it to her. The content was amazing, but bloopers usually come at the end of the movie (right?), and the pictures were not fully explained.

Story and Empathy:

"Connecting the World Online Using Wikispace"- This movie was informative, but dull. Mrs. Stefancis' name caption identified her as head of I. C. T., what it that? However, her voice could be heard and understood easily. The end showed good pictures of wikispaces and we also liked the music. Sadly, it also contained no student perspectives.

"Connecting the World is Too Much"- Christine: I think that it is good because it shows how much people use the internet, and the dramatic effect made the video entertaining. However it only showed one of many tools found on the Internet.

Leila/Morgan:I disagree with Christine on hee statement that you only showed one tool. I dont think that you need to add any more. I got the idea from just the one. Maybe that is just us. I think that the message was very good. Overall, this is a good video to show how people use the internet so much today. It was easy to understand, and made a good point.

"How Businessmen/women Use Internet Today" It was good, but it was hard for us to understand the man that was talking. The idea and execution was good, and it showed how adults can use the internet to communicate in a business setting. The movie showed a perspective not found anywhere else on the page.

The Fun Factor:

"What Happens Whe the World Goes Online"-Although the information was informative, the 'fun factor' was not showing very clearly. The quotes from professionals proved to be a refreshing change from the opinions of the stuents in other videos. There isn't much to watch.

"Half A World Away"- The video was both entertaining and informative!!! The music and lip-syncing was entertaining, while the the inserted text was a good way to show the many uses of the Internet. The music was a great choice, and the changing background also added to the entertainment. The shadow of the words made them easy to read, another plus.

"Living in an Online World"- The music in this video is louder than the people talking. The scenery in the backround was very nice, and the youthful presentation was refreshing. The information, though hard to understand at some times, was good and the way you heard the girls' comments while the question was being shown kept the movie at a good pace. The quotes at the end of the movie were a bit but our intentions for the movie were good.

Background

The backround information was great! It described compicated things in a simple manner, and informed us on aspects of the internet that we never thought about before. Good Job!

Current news

The current news section covers a good range of online happenings. Mentions the "Digital Divide" before "One Laptop per child" might have been a good idea because "One Laptop Per Child" is helping to close the digital divide. In addition, all the links added in the information will let people  reading the wiki learn more about the subject, if they want to. Talking about the use of the internet in politics was a good idea, but it would have been nice to have some more links to other sources on the subject.

Impact on Education

"Sourov's Video, International School Dhaka" - The video covered a wide range of subjects which was very good. However, the music and random noise made the interviews hard too hear. The way Sourov interviewed both teachers and students was a good idea and showing people in the background on ther computers was a nice addition to the movie.

The information following the video is very good, and talking about the change that has happened in the classroom after the invention of the Internet was a great idea.  The paragraph on Google was a nice touch, but I thought it might be better off in the "Google takes over the World" wikispace. The information about social networks was not opinionated which is hard to find on this certain subject (students for there use, teachers usually against), and finally all the links were a nice touch.

 Impact on Employment

The way you started the article comparing the old and the new ways of communication in the business world was very good. The paragraph that followed contained some very good facts, but was hard to follow at times. The way in which you talked about the difference in small and large companies was a very good example of connection using the internet. However, the paragraph on Coolcatteacher might have been also been good in the "Impact on Education" section of the wiki. The "Online Connection" section  could have been placed right after the you stated the new ways of communication, but was very good otherwise.  The movie at the end was very good, but the sound was not ideal. The narration at the beginning was very fast and hard to understand, and the pictures were not the best quality. However the movie conveyed a good idea and message. The coverage about the Internet in the business world was over all very good.
